Many people forget that defense is as important as offense during practice. Basketball games are often won by great defensive play. The offense gets lots of attention, but if the defense is lacking no basketball team will ever win a game.

A bounce pass is essential to learn. In order for a bounce pass to be sufficient, the person should receive the ball around their waist. Try bouncing it about three-quarters to them. Many other factors will affect it, too.

Practice the skill of pass catching. When you practice, be sure to do drills that improve catching wild throws and making great passes. During the course of a game, you can expect there to be many errant passes. Learn how to catch any sort of throw.

Use hand signals to avoid errant passes. It can be frustrating passing to a teammate when you're both heading to the basket. These common miscommunications can be avoided by utilizing hand signals, which tells the passing player the other player is ready for a pass. Practice playing a man-to-man defense and zone defense. Usually, a big part of the game is probably going to be in zone; however, the opposing team can suddenly switch to man-to-man to catch you off guard. Failure to prepare for this type of tactic makes you more vulnerable and hurts your team.

To maximize your layups, take off with the foot that opposes your shooting hand. This means that if you shoot with your right hand, take off from your left foot. This gives you better balance, while keeping you poised toward the basket.

If you wish to do free throw shots reliably, always do the exact same thing before making each shot. For example, you might tug your ear, dribble three times, or flex your wrists. As long as this is a quick set of movements and it's consistent, you won't have any trouble having your body memorize what you're doing.
