If you typically handle the ball a lot, it pays to learn the crossover. This technique passes the ball back and forth from the right hand to the left hand. That action has to be done fast to be successful. When you do it right, the crossover dribble helps you alter directions and go down the court faster.

Get educated on the way to properly pass the ball on a bounce. In order for a bounce pass to be sufficient, the person should receive the ball around their waist. One good rule is for you to bounce the basketball most of the way toward the other player. There are other variables to consider though.

Any good basketball player needs to know how to make a layup. You should expect layups to represent about 80% of all the shots you take in a game. Practice running while dribbling, jumping and shooting as smoothly as you can. This type of technique will translate well into actual game situations.

Want to make the other team not know what's going on? Back passes are a great way to confuse other players. To accomplish this, grab the ball with the dominant hand. Move the ball so that it is behind you. The last step is to flick your wrist in the direction you want the ball to move. This should should thoroughly fool your opponent.

Practice your footwork and control the position of your feet at all times. You want to make sure you don't step over the bounds by even a teeny bit. If you take too many steps and don't dribble, then you are walking. You can't move a foot when you take a charge, pick or screen either, or it's a foul.

You need to be quick to play good basketball. If you want the advantage, you've got more quickly. Consistent, repetitive drilling is the key to speed. But don't try to go even faster than you actually are. Doing so can cause the game to spin out of control as turnovers and faulty passes are made.

Consistent free throws require a consistent technique. Inconsistent shooting will lead to inconsistent results. The best way to perfect your free throw shooting technique is through repetition by practicing the same routine over and over again. You'll miss if you don't have a good routine down.

Be sure you're doing the right kinds of exercises off the court to help you on it. Running, both sprints and long distance, can help your game. Build up your core muscles and the strength in your forearms. If you can develop your confidence through off-court exercise, this can even help your shooting.

If you're playing regulation basketball, you need a hoop that is ten feet high, a large court and ten players. Knowing the basics will enable you to play better. The tips you just read should be helpful but they represent a very small portion of the many things you need to know about basketball.
